Sir,

Plagiarism is a very important problem in medical and scientific publication. The editorial on this topic published some issues back which is very informative. [1] As mentioned in the editorial, to establish plagiarism is an important, first, and sometimes difficult step. When confirmed, proper action by the journal as well as the plagiarist's institute is needed. [2] Retraction, notification, and possible sanctions are the measures to be considered. However, plagiarism is not only limited to verbatim copying, but also lifting of ideas and concepts. [3],[4] These are complex issues requiring judgment. Verbatim duplication of text by proper permission may not be plagiarism. On the other hand, same ideas can be expressed in different words amounting to plagiarism, of which software will not be able to detect. It is suggested that there must be additional ways in addition to plagiarism software to detect plagiarism. Finally, the role of readers to report the plagiarism can support the editor and reviewer in detecting plagiarism so that necessary deterrent measures can be initiated.
